Dandruff Treatment

Definition:

Dandruff  Treatment

The difference between dry scalp and dandruff lies in their underlying causes, appearance, and treatment needs, even though both involve flaking from the scalp.

  • Caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which feeds on oils (sebum) on the scalp.

  • Often linked to oily skin, seborrheic dermatitis, stress, or hormonal changes.

  • Inflammation and excess oil cause rapid skin cell turnover, leading to visible flakes.

  • Flakes are larger, greasy or waxy, yellowish-white, and may stick to the scalp or hair.

  • Often accompanied by itchiness, redness, or scalp irritation.

  • The scalp is usually oily or greasy, with inflamed patches.

  • May have signs of seborrheic dermatitis in other oily areas (e.g., eyebrows, sides of nose).

  • It’s also possible to have both dry scalp and dandruff (e.g., dry surface with oily patches), or to misidentify psoriasis or eczema as dandruff. When in doubt, especially with persistent or worsening symptoms, a dermatologist can diagnose the exact cause.
