Acne is a condition that plagues millions of children and adults. The main cause of acne is clogged pores that lead to bacteria and yeast overgrowth on the skin. Poor diet, stress and medications such as oral contraceptives and corticosteroids can worsen acne. Other factors such as systemic inflammation, hormone fluctuations and increased cortisol levels can also exacerbate acne. Many patients are unaware that drugs such as tretinoin (the active ingredient in Retin-A) can cause serious side effects, including conjunctivitis, permanently thinned skin, extreme burning and dark circles. It’s well worth implementing natural home remedies for acne that tackle the root of the problem and are gentle on the skin.
Localized skin inflammation is a result of the overactivity of the oil glands at the base of specialized hair follicles. Acne happens when oil (sebaceous) glands come to life around puberty when these glands are stimulated by male hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands of both boys and girls.
Symptoms range from uninflamed blackheads to pus-filled pimples or large, red and tender bumps.
Skin: pimples, redness, or tenderness; also common: pimples or blackheads
Types of Acne
Hormonal adult acne typically forms on the lower part of your face. This includes the bottom of your cheeks and around your jawline. For some people, hormonal acne takes the form of blackheads, whiteheads, and small pimples that come to a head, or cysts. Hormonal acne may be often confused with other types of acne such as fungal acne. Thus, you may need a dermatologist’s consultation for a definitive diagnosis. However, if you have irregular periods and hair loss along with acne, it is probably hormonal.
What causes Adult Acne
Adult acne, or post-adolescent acne, is acne that occurs after age 25. For the most part, the same factors that cause acne in adolescents are at play in adult acne. The four factors that directly contribute to acne are: excess oil production, pores becoming clogged by “sticky” skin cells, bacteria, and inflammation.
There are also some indirect factors that influence the aforementioned direct factors, including:
Some medications, including corticosteroids, anabolic steroids, and lithium, can also cause acne. Many skin disorders, including acne, can be a window into a systemic condition. For example, hair loss, excess hair growth, irregular menstrual cycles, or rapid weight gain or loss in addition to acne, or rapid onset with no prior history of acne, can all be red flags of an underlying disease, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, or other endocrine disorders.
