What is a Herb?
In most houses, herbs are not uncommon. The basic household herbs may include Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley and Basil. They are largely used in the kitchen to add flavour in food, to make various teas and they are for medicine, but what is a herb from a botanical point of view?
From a botanical perspective, a herb describes a plant bearing seeds that die after flowering. They are under 30 cm in height and refer to the leafy and green parts of the plant whereas the other parts, like the dried bark, the roots, fruit, seeds and flower buds are referred to as spices. Some household examples of spices are Cinnamon (dried bark), Turmeric (root), Ginger (root), Nutmeg (seed), Black Pepper (fruit) and Clove (dried flower buds).
Herbs and Oils
Herbs and oils are very different but very alike as well. Herbs and oils are both derived from plant material but have different processes to reach their final form.
While oils are steam distilled plant material, herbs can be used fresh or it can be dried before use. Oils have an extremely high frequency (the highest frequency of all natural substances) compared to herbs that have a relatively low to medium frequency. Oils are plant lifeblood that are designed and programmed by YHVH/God to penetrate deeply into body cells to manifest healing in the body, starting with the DNA, in order to restore the human body as the tabernacle of YHVH/God. The function of herbs in the body, is a little different. Herbs are food for the body and aid in improving nutritional deficiencies of the body.
- "And Elohim said, 'See, I have given you every plant that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed, to you it is for food.'" - Genesis 1:29
- "Causing the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for the service of mankind, to bring forth food from the earth" - Psalm 104:14
- "They pluck salt herbs by the bushes, and broom tree roots for their food." - Job 30:4
In these Scriptures, herbs and spices are mentioned as nutrition for the body. In the modern days we live in, it is not common for especially fruit seeds to form a part of our diet. People have lost the need to eat the seeds of fruit like grapes, watermelons, a variety of citrus, cucumbers etc. because many fruits are genetically modified to be seedless.
Botanically spoken, a fruit is defined as the mature organ of a flowering plant that contains the seed (the next generation). When a fruit does not contain seeds, it is not considered a fruit. A seedless fruit is the evidence of a changed, manipulated and genetically modified plant specie. The original blueprint designed by the Father for the plant and its fruit had been altered my man and for the convenience of man. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Master and not to men, knowing that from the Master you shall receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Master, Messiah, you serve.” – Colossians 3:23-24.
Let’s have a quick look at the programming of plants. The design intention of plants are to fill the nutritional needs of humans and to heal the human body. Seedless fruit does not have the correct vitamins and minerals required to fill these needs. The lifeblood of these plants are adulterated and not in line with the original blueprint seated in Heaven. From the start, the intent of Creation was to “be fruitful and multiply”. Seedless plants cannot reproduce because they have an odd set of chromosomes. They are called hybrids.
Our bodies are deprived of important nutrients because of genetic modification. Plant and fruit seeds carry crucial vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to fight against disease and infection. Without it, deficiencies resulting in illness will easily exist in the body.
- "And by the bank of the stream, on both sides, grow all kinds of trees used for food, whose leaves do not wither and fruit do not fail. They bear fruit every new moon, because their water flows from the set-apart place. And their fruit shall be for food, and their leaves for healing.” - Ezekiel 47:12
- "And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. " - Revelation 22:1-2
Ezekiel and Revelation both talk about the Tree of Life that is rooted in the River of Life. From the Tree grows leaves (herbs) that do not wither, fruit (spice) that are new every month and leaves for healing. These leaves point to the lifeblood (oil) of the plant seated in its leaves that are for the healing of the body.
Herbs and Health
“A healthy heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.” – Proverbs 14:30.
Herbs and health go hand in hand. The less herbs that form part of a person’s lifestyle, the weaker the person’s immune system will be because herbs provide the body of necessary nutrition in order to fight disease and infection.
Healing the Body
When we discuss the restoration of the human body back into its original blueprint design as the Tabernacle of YHVH/God, we come to know that healing the body is the first step. Healing the body involves two main mechanisms.
The first mechanism is eliminating trauma and faulty genetic coding from body memory and DNA. This is possible when the miswritten information in the body memory and DNA is deprogrammed and reprogrammed back into its original blueprint, designed by the Father. It also concerns disabling and deprogramming coding for disease and infection on cellular and DNA level. Oils heal the body by using this mechanism.
The second mechanism is ensuring the intake of sufficient and high quality food, as well as supplementing dietary deficiencies with the necessary herbs and spices to built the immune system so that the body can effectively fight disease and infection. If the body’s nutritional needs are met, deficiencies will not exist. Herbs and spices can be consumed in its fresh or dried form. Both are used when cooking. Dried herbs are slightly more common especially if we take herbal teas into account.
Hadassah Healing Herbs have launched multiple herbal products. Its purpose is to supplement the nutritional needs of the body because the food available to us, does not contain the necessary nutrients and minerals for our bodies to maintain a healthy equilibrium. The frequency of the oils enhance this mechanism herbs use in healing the body. Hadassah Healing Oils individually sources every herb to ensure that the highest quality herbs are used in the preparation of all Hadassah Healing Herbs products. There are 3 types of herbal preparations:
- CAPSULES: Contains a mixture of dried herbs for a specific condition, or a single herb. Drink with a glass of water and use as prescribed daily.
- TINCTURES: An alcohol-based herbal extract. Spray into the mouth as prescribed.
- SYRUPS: Concentrated herbal extract preserved in a sugar syrup. Drink as prescribed, eg. Coughing syrup.
Here are some examples of how to treat an illness with oil, and herbs as supplementation:

Defiled Herbs
As usual, the enemy enjoys altering that which is created by YHVH/God. You may wonder where the defilement of herbs started… The reality is that some defiled herbs aren’t herbs at all! Just like oils, the process of cultivation of the plant is very important. For a naturally pure herb and spice to be produced, it is important that the seed is not genetically modified, the soil is healthy and without harsh chemicals, the plant receives clean water and that it is not exposed to pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertilisers, minerals or sunlight.
In the beginning, Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden. They were given every seed bearing plants and fruit to eat, except for the fruit of one tree – Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. satan, in the form of a serpent, deceived Adam and Eve into eating from the forbidden tree. Many things changed as a result of their disobedience.
YHVH/God cursed the serpent, “And יהוה (YHVH/God) Elohim said to the naḥash (serpent), ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all livestock and more than every beast of the field. On your belly you are to go, and eat dust all the days of your life. And I put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed (Messiah). He shall crush your head, and you shall crush His heel.” – Genesis 3:14-15.
YHVH/God cursed the woman, “To the woman He said, ‘I greatly increase your sorrow and your conception – bring forth children in pain. And your desire is for your husband, and he does rule over you.'” – Genesis 3:16.
YHVH/God created man to rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens and the creeping creatures on the earth. We read in Genesis 2:15 that man was created to cultivate and keep the Garden as well, “And יהוה (YHVH/God) Elohim took the man and put him in the garden of Ěḏen to work it and to guard it.”. A curse came upon the earth on the day they sinned because the man listened to his wife and ate from the fruit of the forbidden tree.
“And to the man He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘Do not eat of it’: ‘Cursed is the ground because of you, in toil you are to eat of it all the days of your life, and the ground shall bring forth thorns and thistles for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.'” – Genesis 3:17-18. Because of their disobedience, the earth was cursed with herb-like plants to grow from the ground, more commonly known as weeds.
Many weeds are effectively used for healing, but some weeds are mistaken for healing herbs or spices nowadays. It is very important for us to have a spirit of discernment when it comes to weeds. The Scripture is clear on knowing the difference.
- "Instead of the thorn the cypress comes up, and instead of the nettle the myrtle comes up. And it shall be to יהוה for a name, for an everlasting sign which is not cut off.” - Isaiah 55:13
- "They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant. Therefore judgment shall spring up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field." - Hosea 10:4
- "If my land cries out against me, or its furrows weep together; if I have eaten its fruit without payment, or caused its owners to die; let thistles grow instead of wheat, and useless weed instead of barley.” The words of Iyob are ended." - Job 31:38-40
- "And it shall be in that day, every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand sheqels of silver, let it be for thornbushes and weeds. With arrows and bows one shall go there, because all the land shall be thorn bushes and weeds." - Isaiah 7:23-24
Some defiled herbs aren’t herbs at all and some oils are lifeblood of plants that were never intended to be extracted and used. “and יהושע (Yahshua/Jesus) answering, said to them, ‘Take heed that no one leads you astray.’” – Matthew 24:4. Measure everything by its fruit and by its blueprint designed by the Father.

Herbs in the Bible
The number of times plants, herbs and spices are mentioned in Scripture is near infinite. Herbs and spices were used for a number of reasons like complementing food, incense burning and describing certain concepts. Some frequently mentioned herbs in the Bible are Frankincense and Myrrh resin, Hyssop, Aloe, Nard, Figs, Cinnamon and Myrtle. Frankincense resin along with Stacte, Onycha and Galbanum are spices that formed a part of the fragrant incense burnt at the Altar of Incense in the Tabernacle.
The first instruction YHVH/God gave mankind, was to be fruitful and multiply. It is the first of many comparisons between humans and plants in Scripture. “And Elohim created the man in His image, in the image of Elohim He created him – male and female He created them. And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over all creeping creatures on the earth.'” – Genesis 1:27-28.
Bitter Herbs
Bitter herbs are usually associated with the Pesach/Passover meal because clear instruction was given to eat it. “And they shall eat the flesh on that night, roasted in fire – with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.” The bitter herbs symbolises Pharoah’s oppressive rule over the Israelites and the bitterness of slavery in Egypt. Before the final plague hit Egypt, YHVH/God instructed His people to slaughter a lamb without blemish – a ram under a year of age and to put the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of the house with Hyssop, where they were to eat the meat.
The blood was a sign for the Angel of Death to pass these houses – to not kill the first born of the houses. YHVH/God saved the Israelites from death that night and freed them out of the hands of slavery and into His promises for them. He lead them through the Red Sea and the desert to the Land of milk and honey. “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I am clean; Wash me, and I am whiter than snow.” – Psalm 51:7.
Some bitter herbs are:
- Endive
- Romaine lettuce
- Horseradish
- Parsley
- Watercress
- Celery
- Hyssop
- Horehound
- Chamomile
- Peppermint
Similarly, we suffered a great deal before receiving ransom for our sins through Messiah Yahshua/Jesus. We were slaves to sin and consequently the curse of sin, but through the blood of Messiah, we are forgiven and free from the curse of sin if we choose to teshuvah.
Yahshua/Jesus fulfilled the prophecy written in Lamentations 3:14-15 stating, “I have been a mockery to all my people, Their mocking song all the day. He has filled me with bitterness, He drenched me with wormwood.” when He was offered sour wine mixed with gall (a preparation made with Myrrh) to drink at His crucifixion. ” they gave Him wine mixed with bile (gall) to drink. And after tasting, He would not drink it.” – Matthew 27:34.
The Hebrew word for bitter herbs is maror. The Hebrew word for Myrrh is similar. the resin is called Mor and the distilled oil is called Marar. All of these words refer to bitterness. We know that Myrrh refers to our Messiah and His blood that was shed for our sins and transgressions. Songs of Solomon gives us another comparison between our Messiah and Myrrh. “His cheeks are like a bed of spices, Raised bed of scented plants. His lips are lilies, dripping flowing myrrh.” – Songs of Solomon 5:13.
A Well Watered Garden
Songs of Solomon is a beautiful book about a garden with many fragrant herbs and spices and two lovers. This gives us a picture of Messiah Yahshua/Jesus and His Bride. He dwells within her (2 Corinthians 6:16) and she dwells within Him. In Songs of Solomon 4:12, the Bride is described as a locked up garden where all the fragrant herbs and spices grow. “A garden locked is my sister, my bride, A fountain locked, a spring sealed up.” In Songs of Solomon 5:1, the Groom, Messiah, enters His garden and finds it pleasing because He had found the herbs and spices He was looking for.
“My beloved went down to his garden, To the beds of spices, To feed his flock in the gardens, And to gather lilies.” – Songs of Solomon 6:2. As the Tabernacle of YHVH/God, we must cultivate our gardens so that when Yahshua/Jesus knocks to enter in, He should be pleased with the herbs and spices within us. We must guard our gardens so that our fragrant herbs are not overtaken by weeds, thorns and thistles. “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine. He feeds his flock among the lilies.” – Songs of Solomon 6:3.
