Endocrine System – Hormones Part 2 Adrenal Glands

Endocrine System – Hormones Part 2 Adrenal Glands

The Adrenal glands form part of the larger Endocrine System in the body that controls and regulates various processes in the body including metabolism, growth, and reproduction.

The Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. These hormones act like chemical messages and get circulated through the blood by the cardiovascular system to their target organ and cells. Only the cells with that specific receptor for the hormone will be able to be influenced by that hormone in the target cells.

The adrenal glands produce two specific hormones, namely cortisol and adrenalin to work as the ‘fight and fight’ response to danger or a threatening scenario, to protect the body and regulate the nervous system.

Hormones control various cellular functions and are responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis. This is a fine balance of internal harmony inside the body. To maintain that balance, the endocrine system helps maintain a constant internal balanced environment in response to the external triggers and changes perceived by the body.

For example, the adrenal glands receive messages from the brain in response to an external environmental trigger. For example, stress and external pressure trigger the brain to activate the adrenal glands to release hormones in response to that trigger these hormones keep a balance, and the adrenal glands will produce less once homeostasis (balance) is achieved.

Endocrine Glands

The major glands of the endocrine system are the Pituitary gland, Hypothalamus, Thyroid, Adrenal glands, Pancreas, and then the reproductive organs such as the ovaries and testes. The diagram shows how the communication between the glands with their respective hormones occurs to keep homeostasis in the body.

Adrenal Glands

Two adrenal glands are situated on top of the two kidneys in the upper lower back. The kidneys as well as the adrenal glands are protected by a fatty layer of adipose tissue to prevent shock and injury. The adrenal glands produce and secrete hormones that do not just affect the kidney but as its hormones are circulated in the body, it travels to the target cells.

The adrenal gland consists of two regions:

adrenalglanddiagram

Adrenal Cortex

Produces the hormone cortisol
(a glucocorticoid), Aldosterone
(a mineralocorticoid) and some sex hormones produced in small quantities.

Adrenal Medulla

Produces the hormone Epinephrine (Adrenaline) and Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline)

For these hormones, adrenaline and Cortisol will be released by the glands and have a targeted effect on their target cells, a series of events need to occur. This is called a cascade. A cascade involves the glands in the brain, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary gland to produce hormones and trigger target cells to have the desired effect to maintain homeostasis.

Pituitary gland and Hypothalamus

Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) is released from the Pituitary gland and stimulates the adrenal glands to produce and release both cortisol and adrenaline.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is released by the Hypothalamus which is the main center.

In certain circumstances ACTH released is too low, which in turn leads to the adrenal glands not producing sufficient cortisol and adrenals and could lead to Adrenal Insufficiency. This is then diagnosed as Addison’s disease and will be discussed below.

Pituitary gland tumors are unusual growths that develop in the pituitary gland. This tumor causes the gland to overproduce ACTH hormone which in turn leads to the adrenal glands overproducing cortisol adrenalin. This is then diagnosed as Cushing’s disease discussed below.

Cortisol

Cortisol is the hormone released from the adrenal glands. It is important to have the correct balance of cortisol in your bloodstream for optimal health. Cortisol is released from the adrenal glands in response to stress or the ‘fight or flight’ response, which is your healthy response to threat and danger.

Cortisol functions as:

  • responding to stress or danger
  • increasing your body’s metabolism and use of glucose
  • controlling your blood pressure
  • reduce inflammation

A prolonged level of stress will in effect lead to high levels of cortisol. The pituitary gland will react and cascade the message with the release of ACTH and CRH to the Adrenal glands to produce and release the correct amount of cortisol. High levels of cortisol can lead to lack of sleep and inability to rest and ‘switch-off’. Low levels of cortisol can lead to severe fatigue and a feeling of burnout.

Adrenalin

Adrenalin affects the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous system in response to danger or trauma. It affects the body with physical changes in response to the ‘fight and flight’ response. The release of adrenalin helps you react instantly and quickly to a perceived treat.

Changes and symptoms under the action of adrenalin include

  • heart and breathing rate increase to supply more oxygen and blood to the organs
  • increase blood flow to the brain and muscles
  • raises blood sugar levels to be used by cells in the brain and muscles as energy
  • pupils enlarge to allow more light and see clearly
  • lower pain perception to cope with trauma response

Adrenalin levels return to normal once the perceived danger and stress situation is normalized. For prolonged periods of stress, high levels of adrenalin will continue to circulate in the bloodstream, and it can lead to high blood pressure, anxiety, and an increased rate of stroke and heart attack.

Over time high levels can become depleted and lead to conditions Adrenal Fatigue or chronic fatigue syndrome as discussed below.

Adrenal Gland disorders

The lifestyle of this day and age has a dramatic impact on the health of the adrenal glands. As mentioned above, the important function of Cortisol and adrenaline is in response to the body’s need to protect and respond to the environment.

Stress and chronic high levels of adrenalin and cortisol do have a long-term impact on your health. Many people do not recognize that they are in a chronic state of high levels of stress hormones and that their symptoms could be directly linked to adrenal fatigue, chronic stress, and chronic fatigue. Symptoms often experienced include

  • persistent fatigue even after sufficient rest
  • brain fog
  • insomnia and poor sleep
  • mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • cravings for salt or sweet foods
  • low libido or sexual dysfunction
  • muscle weakness or pain
  • digestive issues such as bloating, diarrhea, and constipation
  • frequent infections and slow wound healing
  • weight gain especially around the abdomen

Recognizing these symptoms is the first step toward addressing the underlying adrenal dysfunction. Lifestyle changes are discussed a bit later in this article.

Some conditions also identified with adrenal disorders include

Other conditions of the adrenal glands will influence their working of them such as.

  • Adrenal tumors – leading to overproduction of some hormones and other symptoms
  • Adrenal crisis – the adrenal gland suddenly stops producing enough cortisol, often triggered by stress or illness. Symptoms include severe fatigue, dehydration, and low blood pressure.
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia – This is a group of genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands’ ability to produce hormones. Symptoms vary depending on the specific genetic mutation but may include abnormal development of sexual characteristics.
  • Adrenal medullary hyperplasia – This condition involves the overgrowth of cells in the adrenal medulla, leading to excessive production of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Symptoms may include high blood pressure, palpitations, and anxiety.
  • Hyperaldosteronism – This condition involves the overproduction of aldosterone, leading to high blood pressure and low potassium levels. It can be caused by adrenal tumors or other underlying conditions.
  • Autoimmune adrenal disorders – such as Addison’s disease and autoimmune polyglandular syndrome, can manifest a wide range of symptoms due to the dysfunction of the adrenal glands and sometimes other affected endocrine glands.

Stress

Stress is a general term given a feeling or being under a lot of mental and/or emotional pressure. A prolonged period of pressure turns into a stress response and state of the body and mind and can cause a person to feel unable to cope.

Stress can affect a person’s ability to process thinking, decisions, and impulse reactions as well as how you perceive external and internal changes to your surroundings.

Common signs of stress include poor sleep, sweating, difficulty concentrating for periods, appetite changes, anxiety, irritability, and racing thoughts being a constant scenario.

Stress causes the natural increase of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol that enable you to deal with pressures and threats in the ‘flight or fight’ response mode. A normal response would be that the stress hormone levels return to normal once the threat of danger passes. However, under a high level of stress, the increased stress hormones remain in the bloodstream leading to the feeling of stress.

Symptoms of Stress and raised stress hormones include

  • Headache and dizziness
  • Muscle tension, aches, and pain
  • Fast heart rate and chest pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Exhaustion and poor sleep or lack of sleep
  • Gastrointestinal problems e.g. diarrhoea, bloating
  • Skin changes

Stress - Treatment Protocol

NOTE: If you do use chronic medication, you should continue to do so. The treatment protocol should be used in addition to medication and the aim is to reduce the chronic medication over time. Oils and herbs work on different mechanisms in the body and each person’s healing will be individual.

Diffuse (see below) 5 drops Stress Blend (for diffuser) for at least 8 hours during the night while sleeping.  You can also, include 5 drops Trauma Blend (for diffuser).

Drink1 capsuleStress Ingestible, once a day.

Healing your gut is also important; your gut produces 95% of the body’s supply of serotonin and hundreds of neurochemicals that the brain needs to regulate basic processes. Suggestion therefore would be to also drink 1 capsule Gut Cleanse, once a day.

Also, supplement with Collagen 350g 450g 700g Bone Broth 350g 450g and Magnesium.

For poor sleep and Insomnia, Diffuse (see below) 10 drops Sleep Blend 10ml (for diffuser) or Drink Sleep Ingestible blend one capsule per day.

Herbal Stress Tincture use in mouth as needed. Also to consider drinking Neurotonic 20ml twice per day

Diffuse 2-3 drops of each oil; maximum 10-12 drops in total, at a time, unless otherwise advised.

NOTE: Always use an ultrasonic diffuser (with a diffusing duration of at least 8 hours), to diffuse pure essential oils. Do not use a humidifier, air purifier, or a candle, as they only smell good and have no further effect. An electric, ultrasonic, diffuser dispenses essential oils into the air through vibrations of a plate which causes ultrasonic waves, creating microscopic particles of oils that disperse into the air. It, therefore, breaks open the essential oil volatile molecules, to have a medicinal effect in that it can penetrate through the blood-brain barrier. It is always good to use a diffuser at night while you are sleeping.

Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a term to describe a collection of non-specific symptoms caused by prolonged exposure to stress and stressful conditions. It is thought to occur due to the draining of adrenal glands that release adrenalin and cortisol to equip the body to cope with stressful conditions. Although not recognized as a medical condition by most medical practitioners, the symptoms can vary widely.

  • Persistent fatigue despite getting enough rest and sleep.
  • Muscle aches and pains that are not attributed to a specific cause
  • Insomnia and disturbed sleep patterns.
  • Weight gain around the abdomen.
  • Brain fog, poor concentration, forgetfulness, and mental confusion.
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cravings for salty or sugary foods.
  • Reduced tolerance to stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Reduced immunity with frequent illnesses or infections.
  • Anxiety, irritability, or depression

Underlying health concerns such as low iron levels and an underactive thyroid gland should be considered as the symptoms are also like adrenal fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue - Treatment Protocol

NOTE: If you do use chronic medication, you should continue to do so. The treatment protocol should be used in addition to medication and the aim is to reduce the chronic medication over time. Oils and herbs work on different mechanisms in the body and each person’s healing will be individual.

Drink 1 capsuleChronic Fatigue, once a day.

Topically apply 15 drops, Adrenal Blend over the kidneys and back, once a day.

Diffuse (see below) 10 drops Sleep Blend 10ml (for diffuser) and 5 drops each; Cedarwood 5ml 10ml and Trauma Blend 10ml (for diffuser), while sleeping, at night.

Diffuse 5 drops Stress Blend 10ml (for diffuser) during the day.

Topically apply a few drops of the Depression/Anxiety Blend 30ml, on the spine, neck and underneath the feet, when needed, and/or inhale (see below). Do not ingest this blend.

1 – 2 teaspoons, MZN 150g 450g, once a day; swallow the MZN, as you would swallow yogurt.

Topically apply Peppermint Roller  on temples and neck, as needed, for energy.

Kidney and Adrenal Herbal supplement two twice per day.

And Kidney and adrenal tincture 3 times per day in the mouth.

Also to consider drinking Neurotonic 20ml twice per day

Inhale Method

Drip 2-3 drops of suggested essential oil or as otherwise directed, into the palm of the hands, rub once to open the molecules (rubbing will evaporate the oil), cup your hands around your mouth and nose, and deeply inhale.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition that is also known as Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). It is usually a long-term condition with persistent fatigue and exhaustion that does not improve with rest and sleep. It reduces the ability to function normally in everyday life. It most commonly affects the nervous and immune systems.

People with ME/ CFS experience severe fatigue associated with post-exertional malaise (PEM). This is when the body is not able to recover after using even small amounts of energy, leading to a flare-up in symptoms. This fatigue feels very different from ordinary tiredness and may take a day or two to kick in after physical, mental, or emotional exertion.

It may start gradually and worsen over months or impact the body with sudden fatigue. Causes of CFS have been seen to be such as infections and sometimes it is diagnosed as post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS). Other factors include exposure to toxins, physical trauma, and emotional or physical stress.

Symptoms associated include extreme fatigue, worsen with exercise or mental exertion, and do not normally improve with rest or sleep. Other symptoms can also include sleep disturbances, headaches, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, muscle and joint pain, gastrointestinal problems, and light and noise sensitivity to name a few. Every person affected by CFS is different some may experience symptoms that are mild or may develop more severe symptoms.

Mental health and low mood, anxiety, and depression are experienced by people with chronic fatigue syndrome due to the impact on their overall well-being from the condition. This however does not mean CFS is a mental health condition.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Treatment Protocol

NOTE: If you do use chronic medication, you should continue to do so. The treatment protocol should be used in addition to medication and the aim is to reduce the chronic medication over time. Oils and herbs work on different mechanisms in the body and each person’s healing will be individual.

Drink 2 – 3 capsules, throughout the day of the Chronic Fatigue for the first week, thereafter, one capsule daily.

Drink 1 to 2 teaspoons, MZN 150g 450g, once a day; swallow the MZN, as you would swallow yogurt.

Chronic fatigue can be associated with a lack of sleep; therefore diffuse (see below) during the night for 8 hours, the following pure oils: Cedarwood 5ml 10ml, Vetiver 5ml 10ml, and Roman Chamomile 5ml 10ml.

To assist with brain fog; diffuse during the day, while working/studying, one of the following diffuser blends: Brain Blend OR Memory Blend.

For intense body and muscle pain, topically apply the Sore Muscle and Massage Blend.

For depression symptoms drink 1 capsule full, once a day, each; Depression Support Ingestible and Gut Cleanse Blend.

If you have to drink more than one capsule a day, spread them over the course of the day, never more than two capsules at a time. Spreading the capsules throughout the day assists the body with proper absorption. Always good to have a very small snack/fruit before drinking capsules.

Also diffuse (see belowDepression/Anxiety Blend, Neroli 5ml 10ml, Rose Geranium 5ml 10ml and Frankincense 5ml  10ml.

Apply Peppermint 5ml 10ml throughout the day over the temples and inhale (see below), as needed.

Supplement with B-complex Vitamins, Magnesium and Potassium.

Kidney and Adrenal Herbal supplement two twice per day.

And Kidney and adrenal tincture 3 times per day in the mouth.

Also to consider drinking Neurotonic 20ml twice per day

Inhale Method

Drip 2-3 drops in the palm of the hands, rub once to open the molecules, rubbing will evaporate the oil, cup your hands around your mouth and nose, and deeply inhale.

It, therefore, breaks open the essential oil volatile molecules, to have a medicinal effect in that it can penetrate through the blood-brain barrier. It is always good to use a diffuser at night while you are sleeping.

In addition:

Healing Bath Salts – Mix 3 cups of Epsom salt and 1 cup baking soda, and also add 40 drops of your favorite essential oil. Then add 1 cup of this mix to your bath (as warm as you can stand). Soak for 20 to 40 minutes.

Lavender and Ylang Ylang relax the mind and body and also increase circulation. Rosemary improves energy by decreasing inflammation and supporting brain health.  Holy Basil is an adaptogen that improves energy and reduces stress. Roman Chamomile is ideal for  fighting stress and insomnia.

Addison's Disease

Addison’s disease, also called adrenal insufficiency, is an uncommon illness that occurs when the Pituitary gland does not produce enough ACTH hormone which in turn leads to the adrenal glands not producing sufficient cortisol and another hormone aldosterone.

Addison’s disease can affect anyone and can be life-threatening. Treatment involves taking hormones to replace those that are missing. Symptoms include extreme fatigue, weight loss and loss of appetite, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, gastrointestinal disturbances, muscle weakness and pain, and depression.

Addison's Disease - Treatment Protocol

NOTE: If you do use chronic medication, you should continue to do so. The treatment protocol should be used in addition to medication and the aim is to reduce the chronic medication over time. Oils and herbs work on different mechanisms in the body and each person’s healing will be individual.

Drink 1 capsule each; Thyroid Support BlendDNA Protector, and Hormone Balance Blend, once a day.

If you have to drink more than one capsule a day, spread them over the course of the day, never more than two capsules at a time. Spreading the capsules throughout the day assists the body with proper absorption. Always good to have a very small snack/fruit before drinking capsules.

Also suggested to drink 1 capsule, Chronic Fatigue, once a day to assist with fatigue.

This is an autoimmune disease that needs to be treated out of the DNA, so the DNA Protector is a core oil in treating Addison’s.

It will also be useful to add Spinal therapy blend 30ml over the spine at night.

You can also use the Frankincense and Myrrh Blend, topically and orally (1 capsule, once a day).

Apply 3 drops of the Thyroid Support Blend, over the thyroid, twice a day.

Apply 5 drops of the DNA Protector, over the thyroid twice a day.

Apply 15 drops of Adrenal Blend over the adrenals, once a day.

When applying more than one oil blend to the same area, do so over the course of the day or wait 10 minutes in between.

If you have to drink more than one capsule a day, spread them over the course of the day, never more than two capsules at a time. Spreading the capsules throughout the day assists the body with proper absorption. Always good to have a very small snack/fruit before drinking capsules.

Use Liver Cleanse Blend topically over the liver, 10 drops twice a day.

Apply 15 drops of the Cell Rejuvenation Blend over the spine area. Also, apply Frankincense and Myrrh Blend over the stomach and spine once a day.

It is always good to use a diffuser at night while you are sleeping.

Cushing's disease

When a tumor develops in the Pituitary gland, it is normally benign and non-cancerous. It causes the gland to overproduce ACTH hormone which in turn leads to the adrenal glands overproducing cortisol and adrenalin.

Symptoms include the development of a rounded face (moon face), weight gain and fatty deposits between shoulders (buffalo hump), thinning of arms and legs, easy bruising and slow healing of cuts and infections, and stretch marks across the abdomen, thighs, breasts, and arms.

Women may see more thicker and visible body and facial hair and irregular or absent menstrual periods. Men may see decreased fertility, sex drive, and erectile dysfunction.

Cushing's disease - treatment Protocol

NOTE: If you do use chronic medication, you should continue to do so. The treatment protocol should be used in addition to medication and the aim is to reduce the chronic medication over time. Oils and herbs work on different mechanisms in the body and each person’s healing will be individual.

Drink 1 capsule 90’s 150’s

You can start by diffusing the Stress blend during the day or night, drink Ashwagandha herbal supplements 2 twice per day and drink the Adrenal oil blend one capsule per day.

Please refer to the protocols and all the suggestions about each condition.

Pure Essential Oils

Lavender essential oil is one of the most well-researched essential oils for stress relief and relaxation. It contains compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate, which have been shown to have calming effects on the nervous system.

Studies have demonstrated that inhalation or topical application of lavender oil can reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality. These effects may be mediated through modulation of neurotransmitter activity, particularly GABAergic transmission, which plays a key role in regulating stress and anxiety responses.

Additionally, lavender oil has been shown to modulate the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates the body’s stress response. By reducing cortisol levels and mitigating HPA axis hyperactivity, lavender oil may help alleviate symptoms of adrenal dysfunction and chronic fatigue.

Bergamot essential oil is known for its uplifting and mood-balancing properties, attributed to its content of compounds such as limonene and linalool.

Research suggests that inhalation or diffusion of bergamot oil may help reduce stress and anxiety levels, as well as improve mood and promote relaxation. These effects may be mediated through the modulation of neurotransmitter activity, including serotonin and dopamine, which play roles in mood regulation.

Bergamot oil may also have anxiolytic effects by modulating the activity of the autonomic nervous system and reducing sympathetic arousal. By promoting parasympathetic dominance, bergamot oil may help counteract the physiological effects of chronic stress and adrenal dysfunction.

Clary sage essential oil has hormone-balancing effects, particularly for estrogen levels, which may be beneficial for women experiencing hormonal imbalances and associated symptoms such as fatigue and mood swings.

Studies have shown that inhalation or topical application of clary sage oil can reduce cortisol levels and promote relaxation. These effects may be mediated through modulation of the HPA axis and the limbic system, which regulates emotional responses.

Additionally, clary sage oil contains compounds such as linalyl acetate, which have been shown to have anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. By reducing stress and improving mood, clary sage oil may help alleviate symptoms of adrenal dysfunction and chronic fatigue.

Roman chamomile essential oil is known for its soothing effects, attributed to its content of compounds such as α-bisabolol and chamazulene.

Research suggests that inhalation or topical application of Roman chamomile oil can reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality. These effects may be mediated through modulation of neurotransmitter activity, including GABAergic transmission, which plays a key role in regulating stress and anxiety responses.

Roman chamomile oil may also have anti-inflammatory effects, which can be beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic inflammation associated with adrenal dysfunction and chronic fatigue.

Frankincense essential oil contains α-pinene and limonene, which have been shown to have anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds may modulate neurotransmitter activity and immune responses in the brain, leading to reduced stress and inflammation. Additionally, β-caryophyllene has been shown to have analgesic effects, which may contribute to the pain-relieving properties of frankincense oil.

Ylang Ylang essential oil contains linalool and geranyl acetate, which have sedative and anxiolytic properties. These compounds may interact with neurotransmitter systems in the brain, such as GABAergic and serotonergic pathways, to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Additionally, germacrene D has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may indirectly support adrenal health by reducing inflammation associated with chronic stress.

Rose essential oil contains citronellol, geraniol, and nerol, which have been shown to have sedative and anxiolytic properties. These compounds may modulate neurotransmitter activity in the brain, leading to reduced anxiety and improved relaxation. Additionally, rose oil has been shown to have antioxidant effects, which may help mitigate oxidative stress associated with chronic stress.

Sandalwood essential oil contains α-santol and β-santalol, which have been shown to have sedative and anxiolytic properties. These compounds may interact with neurotransmitter systems in the brain, such as GABAergic and serotonergic pathways, to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Additionally, α-bergamotol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may indirectly support adrenal health by reducing inflammation associated with chronic stress.

Patchouli essential oil contains patchoulol, α-bulnesene, and α-guaiene, which have been shown to have sedative and anxiolytic properties. These compounds may modulate neurotransmitter activity in the brain, leading to reduced anxiety and improved relaxation. Additionally, patchouli oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help mitigate inflammation associated with chronic stress.
