Flu influenza

Flu (influenza) is a common infectious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes. It can be very unpleasant, but you’ll usually begin to feel better within about a week.

You can catch the flu all year round, but it’s especially common in winter, which is why it’s also known as seasonal flu.

Flu isn’t the same as the common cold. Flu is caused by a different group of viruses and the symptoms tend to start more suddenly, be more severe and last longer.

The main symptoms of flu include:

  • a high temperature (fever) of 38C or above
  • tiredness and weakness
  • a headache
  • general aches and pains
  • a dry, chesty cough

Cold-like symptoms, such as a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat, can also be caused by flu, but they tend to be less severe than the other symptoms you have.

Flu can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.

Is it the flu or a cold?

It can sometimes be difficult to tell if you have flu or just a cold, as the symptoms can be quite similar. The main differences are:

Flu symptoms:

  • come on quickly
  • usually include fever and aching muscles
  • make you feel too unwell to continue your usual activities

Cold symptoms:

  • come on gradually
  • mainly affect your nose and throat
  • are fairly mild, so you can still get around and are usually well enough to go to work

Steam Method
Add 3-4 drops (or as otherwise advised) of essential oil/diffuser blend to boiling water in a large pot or heatproof bowl. Immediately after adding the essential oil, cover the bowl with a large bath towel to avoid molecules from escaping into the air. Place your face above the bowl underneath the towel, not too close to avoid the steam from burning your skin, inhale the hot steam through your nose for no more than two minutes at a time and for a total of approximately 10 minutes.
Diffuse 2-3 drops of each oil; maximum 10-12 drops in total, at a time.
NOTE: Always use an ultrasonic diffuser – search the website for several options: colour, size, look and price (with a diffusing duration of at least 8 hours), to diffuse pure essential oils. Do not use a humidifier, air purifier, or a candle, as they only smell good and have no further effect. An electric, ultrasonic, diffuser dispenses essential oils into the air through vibrations of a plate which causes ultrasonic waves, creating microscopic particles of oils that disperse into the air. It, therefore, breaks open the essential oil volatile molecules, to have a medicinal effect in that it can penetrate through the blood-brain barrier. It is always good to use a diffuser at night while you are sleeping.
Supplement with Elderberry which helps with the immune system function; boosts white blood cells. Echinacea helps your body fight of infections; best taken at the first sign of illness (1000 milligrams, 2 to 3 times daily).
