Monascus Purpurens contains large quantities of monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the active ingredient in the cholesterol-lowering drug “Lovastatin”. Practitioners must be very careful in obtaining the correct herb, as some red rice products contain little or no monacolin K and a contaminant called “citrinin”.
